Nationality given as American, but the last time I did a Google search there was no indication where she was born; according to this obituary she appeared to do a lot of work in Canada. Can we be sure she was a U.S. citizen? Rms125a@hotmail.com (talk) 17:04, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
- I agree she seems Canadian rather than American [1]. WWGB (talk) 00:44, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, she's Canadian! I have updated the source that supplies the proof. It's from the CBC, though WWGB's source, from Metro News Canada, would have sufficed as well. :) Ed (talk) 03:17, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
Choctaw Chief phillip martin passed away on Thursday. is he famous enough to be listed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.19.174.249 (talk) 05:34, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Does this guy really deserve a place here? Reading his article he seems to be here because of who his father is and the fact that he announced he was gay. If I announce I'm gay (which I'm not) will someone write a page about me on Wiki? His article does not refer to any achievements, talent or deeds. Do we really need this type of article in Wiki? Williamgeorgefraser 10:26, 7 February 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Williamgeorgefraser (talk • contribs)
- Then you should initiate an article deletion debate. WWGB (talk) 14:34, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
- If you announced you were gay in a notoriously closeted context such as professional sports, someone probably would write one about you, yes. Your reduction is a little disingenuous. Anyway, as long as he has his own article, as WWGB suggests, he's fine for this page. tomasz. 23:52, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
I don't know if Brendan Burke was notable enough or not to warrant his own Wikipedia page, or a mention on the Deaths list, but I do know that his reason for notability, which is currently listed as "ice hockey player", is misleading. Yes, he was a hockey player, but his degree of fame stemmed from his father being one of the best-known executives in the NHL, and for coming out as a homosexual. Listing Brendan as a hockey player would be a little like listing Michael Jordan as a baseball player -- true enough, but missing the reason for his fame altogether. Drpickem (talk) 13:46, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
- The death for the person above says he was "notable for coming out". Is "coming out" a proper way to say he was gay? I mean coming out is a really vague term. 76.108.0.229 (talk) 23:59, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- It's not vague at all. See coming out. WWGB (talk) 02:17, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- I've moved this so all discussion can be in the same place. In my view, if a notable person comes out, that is a notable event in his life, but cannot make a non-notable person notable, given that people come out every day. Opinion so far seems to be that his notability as a sportsperson is limited, and that coming out cannot add to that. Issues of his notability qua sports should be addressed at his article. William Tenn is NOT Philip J. Klass (who died in 2005). William Tenn was born Philip Klass, but never, ever was a UFOlogist. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lauriemann (talk • contribs) 22:06, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Alpine: proper or common adjective?
[edit]The answer to whether Alpine is a proper or common adjective (reworded from noun) depends upon the source. According to Webster's New World Dictionary, Third College Edition, it's a proper adjective. This agrees with what W guice says in the history log on February 9. However, Wictionary considers this a common adjective. Go figure. Ed (talk) 05:26, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Here's a link to dictionary.com which states that Alpine is capitalized when referring to skiing: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/alpine Ed (talk) 17:51, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
Where is the proof that he is dead? ANY link will do but I suspect vandalism Jdjd2010 (talk) 04:38, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

His entry on this article only says he was the brother of someone. That does not give him any notability. If he is notable in his own right, the entry should say what for. If he is not notable, he should be removed. Lkjhgfdsa 0 (talk) 20:18, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

he passed away on February 24, he was well know as one of the best crew chiefs in NASCAR history, he was the crew chief to well known drivers like David Person, Darrell Waltrip, and Dale Earnhardt. he was 73, why isn't his death mentioned on here yet, here's the story from NASCAR's website:http://www.nascar.com/2010/news/headlines/official/02/25/jake.elder.obit/index.html--Boutitbenza 69 9 (talk) 05:39, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit]I would not know for sure, but suspect this person is not notable. He was the son of Marie Osmond, but .... Derek R Bullamore (talk) 15:46, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed, if he is only notable for being the son of someone famous, then he should not be listed. I think there have been previous examples of this. --Lettik (talk) 17:24, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed. But lots of people are considered notable for flimsy reasons. Paris Hilton, "socialites," "art collectors," Presidential pets, people with inherited wealth and no achievement other than membership on boards. Why are "reality show" contestants notable? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Derrickchapman (talk • contribs) 20:29, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
- Paris Hilton is internationally famous. People don't have articles merely on the basis of having inherited wealth, though many have an article due to inheriting an aristocratic title. Membership on a board is only justification for having an article if the position is a senior one in a major company. Being a contestant on a reality show does not give a person sufficient notability for their own article, unless they won the show or went on to have a successful career as a musician, television presenter, actor etc. If there is an article on a person who you feel is not notable enough to justify its existence, propose it be deleted. Jim Michael (talk) 23:21, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

I was referring to listing their deaths, not articles. Look over the February deaths: you'll find socialite twice. One of these socialites has as his claim to fame that he was the first in Hong Kong to have a gold toilet. --- —Preceding unsigned comment added by Derrickchapman (talk • contribs) 00:24, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
Added info about Marie Osmond's son who committed suicide in downtown Los Angeles friday night, 26 Feb 2010, at about 9:00 PM by leaping to his death; they said he was 18 yrs old.
WB2 (talk) 04:16, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- ... and removed because he is not notable per WP:NOTINHERITED. WWGB (talk) 04:23, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- What? You guys would have removed Jesus Christ under your new criterion. Blosil has done some acting, his mother is famous, and further his mom recently had attempted suicide herself. Also, he's been in the news; what do you want, info from logins who obviously appear to be terrorists under guise?
Like the guy above said: a murderer of fame matches to your criterion more than a person within the news such as Chastity Bono Cher Bono's daughter, etc.WB2 (talk) 02:05, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

And yet you add common murderers simply because they were executed per process of law. You guys need to rethink your criteria. It's skewed.ADWNSW (talk) 14:32, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and must by definition include the good, the bad and the downright ugly. Jack the Ripper, the Boston Strangler and Charles Manson (to name but three - there are many thousands) were arguably not ideal dinner table guests, but notable nevertheless. Derek R Bullamore (talk) 15:28, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
- I wonder which would grab your attention more on the news. An infamous serial killer dying, or the son of the sister of someone mildly famous dying. Difficult... EJBH (talk) 00:57, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
- "The news" is here today and gone tomorrow, like the newspaper in which my chips were wrapped. Transitory reports are just that; it's a longer-term impact that predicates notability. In the case in point, merely having a connection to somebody notable does not itself confer notability. Rodhullandemu 02:12, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- I wonder which would grab your attention more on the news. An infamous serial killer dying, or the son of the sister of someone mildly famous dying. Difficult... EJBH (talk) 00:57, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
- Chaz Bono has an article because of his own career, not because of his parents' fame; though his parents high-profile has given him media coverage which has assisted his career. Blosil does not have an IMDb profile. If he does have independent notability, then there would be some proof of that. His suicide is in the news because his adoptive mother and uncles are famous. Jim Michael (talk) 08:20, 4 March 2010 (UTC)
- As a matter of record: it is a person of note, not a noteworthy person. Chastity Bono is just one such person of note, due both to her sex change as well as her famous parents Sonny & Cher. She or he has made well with that sort of "proxy-fame"; Blosil simply did not, but the both of them are of the same genre. How can they both not qualify? Because some of you here have made a value judgement. You said: if its a "noteworthy person," we'll accept them; if its a "person of note," we won't.
- That's where the problem lies bro: you people can't get off this "provenance" garbage.
- It's like Gerald Ford's childhood stamp collection. When he had it appraised, they told him it was worthless. He then laughed at them and said: we'll see what it goes for at auction. He then put it up for auction, and it sold for 1000's of times its actual catalogue value and why? Because people are stupid; they really believe that if a "famous" person owns it, it instantly has value.
- But THAT'S NOT APPROPRIATE HERE ON AN ENCYLCLOPEDIA; a PERSON OF NOTE takes presidence over and above a NOTEWORTHY PERSON.
- There is a significant difference: C Bono is fairly well-known due to his (now self-identifies as male) career and LGBT activism. Blosil did not have a career; he did not receive media coverage when he was alive. The only reason for the coverage of his death is that his adoptive mother and uncles are famous. Whilst to his family and friends his death is significant, the only Wikipedia article that he should be mentioned on is Marie Osmond. People's deaths are not listed simply because they have famous family members. Farrah Fawcett's mother is not in Deaths in March 2005, nor is David Cameron's son in Deaths in February 2009. Neither Mark Ruffalo's brother nor Macaulay Culkin's sister are listed in Deaths in December 2008. Jim Michael (talk) 14:37, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
T-Bone Wolk died. I'm not a good editor on Wikipedia, can someone do the recent deaths?
http://themusicsover.wordpress.com/2010/02/27/t-bone-wolk/ For those that watched SNL in the 80s, and were Hall and Oates fans, this is a sad day. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Deafsound (talk • contribs) 19:16, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
